Many of you may know Tisha Campbell-Martin as the successful and patient wife, “Gina Walters-Payne” from the hit sitcom, Martin. Well, I’m sure we all forgot that Ms. Campbell-Martin is also a multi-talented singer and dancer. She is a triple threat, which is hard to come by in today’s entertainment industry. Tisha Campbell-Martin is now returning to her music chops and sharing her new single, “Steel Here” . From the sound of the music and the visuals, we are glad she is back!
Campbell-Martin’s, “Steel Here” is a song about resiliency and overcoming the many obstacles that she has experienced in her life’s journey. The song has a powerful message that all can apply to their own lives and reflect that through it all they are still standing.
Love this song and this video! Tisha sounds great and it’s so good to see she can still move with the best of them (i.e Janet Jackson).

Hi Soulsters! We wanted bring you the latest single from singer/songwriter and Maroon 5 member, PJ Morton, “Claustrophobic“. We haven’t heard much from Mr. Morton, since his wonderful 2013 release,”New Orleans“, so it is so great to hear from him again. Morton’s “Claustrophobic” is him expressing disdain for being put in a box musically. The music industry definitely has the ability to stifle any creativity an artist has and I’m sure many artists can relate to this song. What PJ Morton is singing about is one of the reasons why the music industry and radio is dead. So much of the music on the radio is uninspired and has no depth. It’s just filler with no soul to it. This song is powerful and it gives voice to those just wanting to be creative and have it be accepted as it is. PJ Morton has always been a gifted and soulful songwriter and “Claustrophobic” showcases that effortlessly.

Hi Soulsters! Check out the video for Janelle Monae’s new single, “Yoga”. Now, she’s singing about my favorite thing to do, so I will give her a pass on that. The song carries the “ATL sound”…which I’m not too crazy about but I love her artistry. It looks like she is going in a more mainstream direction. What do you think of this?
Happy Saturday Soulsters! Now this is a fabulous blast from the past. Groove Theory consisted of singer, producer, Bryce Wilson and singer/songwriter, Amel Larrieux. This album changed the game as far as hearing something different from the “new jack swing” sound that was slowing moving out at that time. So much soul and melody, this album was a welcome breath of fresh air in R&B music.
“Tell Me” was their first single and introduced us to their smooth sound and Larrieux’s lovely and soulful vocals. Larrieux went on to a successful solo career and has released five independent projects. She is considered Neo Soul royalty among her fans that have been following her since her Groove Theory days. Reminisce on this classic and check out the video below. Enjoy!
“As musicians and artists, it’s important we have an environment – and I guess when I say environment, I really mean the industry, that really nurtures these gifts. Oftentimes, the machine can overlook the need to take care of the people who produce the sounds that have a lot to do with the health and well-being of society.”
~ Lauryn Hill, Singer, Songwriter, Rapper, Producer
Hey Soulsters! For this week’s Old School Saturday feature, we would like to honor, producer, arranger, instrumentalist, Quincy Jones’ birthday today. Since it’s Saturday, we thought is would be cool to remember Quincy Jones’ dance track, “Razzamatazz” featuring R&B and Jazz vocalist Patti Austin from the Grammy winning album, “The Dude” (1981).
House duo Masters at Work consisting of “Little” Louie Vega and Kenny “Dope” Gonzalez later released their House remix to this song in 2001 called, “Like a Butterfly (You Send Me)” with vocals from the great Patti Austin as well. Check it out below and get your dance on!
“The true beauty of music is that it connects people. It carries a message, and we, the musicians, are the messengers.

Singer, songwriter Carmen Rodgers has just released her new album, “Stargazer”! Dallas TX native Rodgers who is currently based out of Atlanta, GA, has been blessing us with her sound for a few years now. You may mostly be familiar with her as part of The Foreign Exchange crew or you may have heard from her last two offerings, “Free” and “The Bitter Suite”, EP.
Rodgers’ rich, full and soulful vocals stand front and center on each song of “Stargazer”. She can sing anything and she proves it on songs like “Stay” and “Love Stories”. These songs are the most beautifully arranged on the album. Her voice soars along with a 14-piece string section in those songs and it is absolute heaven. I loved that she incorporated this into her sound. It just showcases her vocals even more. Her lead single, “Heartless” is a banger and is what we have come to expect from her. Soulful, funky vocals with a bumping track. It’s very effective and has defined her sound overall. “Beyond the Stage” is a nice groovy and smooth joint that is on constant repeat here at Soulster Vibes. “Charge”, is a lovely duet featuring singer, songwriter, Anthony David. It definitely should receive airplay on contemporary R&B radio. Actually the whole album should receive airplay, but I digress.
“Stargazer” is a must-listen and such a well-rounded offering from Carmen Rodgers. Another album from an indie artist that you can listen to straight through. Support GOOD music people and go get this! Also, she is currently touring in support of this album so be sure to check her out in a city near you.

Hariet by Dangerfeel Newbies is a brilliant concept album inspired by the story of Mr. Dangerfield Newby, one of five African-Americans of the John Brown party. I love music that entertains, inspires as well as teaches listeners something of value. Dangerfeel Newbies is based out of Atlanta, GA and consists of Jamal Ahmad, (DJ) Mark Angel (DJ) and Darren Wagner (DJ, Keyboardist, Musician).
Hariet’s sound encompasses so many genres such as House, Soul, Funk, Jazz and a little Hip-Hop and it all flows together effortlessly. When Hariet opens with the smooth jazz feel of“Hariet’s Theme” and goes right into the groovin’, “You Make Me Something” featuring Lamaj, you know you are about to embark on a wonderful wave of music. Songs like, “Shine” featuring Mashan Da’Lyric, and “Swinging with the New Jacks” are so melodically refreshing and uplifting. They both either make you want to dance or nod your head to the rhythms in appreciation. The world renowned vocalist and jazz artist, Julie Dexter is also featured in “I’ve Got To Live My Life”. A lovely song about making a change, her voice and the track just take you away. It’s just beautiful.
If you haven’t heard of them yet or you have and haven’t had the chance to check this album out, please just do it. You will love this album. It should serve as a collector’s item for all of the real music heads out there. By the way, take the time to research the rich history of Mr. Dangerfield Newby and his story. This is a perfect example of music entertaining us and bringing somewhat obscure information about our history to the forefront. Check out Hariet and let them know what you think!
